Rush Information

Interested in Kappa Phi Lambda? Rush is a time for those who are interested in joining our sisterhood to get to know the sisters and find out more about our sorority! Rush is designed to provide a fun and relaxed environment for you to come out and have a good time, ask questions, and get to know the sisters. Rush is completely free, and there is no obligation to join by coming to any of our events. By providing a relaxed and fun environment, our rush is designed for you to be able to come out and have a good time, to ask questions and interact with our sisters, and to see what we're all about. Rush is non-obligatory and all events are free. Below, you will find the answers to our most frequently asked rush questions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to be Asian to join?

Absolutely not. Although we are an Asian-interest sorority, by no means are we Asian exclusive. Across the nation, our sisters represent over 50 different ethnicities and over 30 different native languages. As a cultural sorority, we promote cultural diversity as a key value. We are an Asian-interest sorority; never Asian exclusive.

What is “Freshman Freeze”?

Freshman Freeze is an OSU-mandated rule that first semester freshmen, or any student with less than 12 credit hours of class completed at a university, cannot join any social or cultural Greek life organization until they have finished 12+ credit hours and have maintained a 2.5 GPA. This is to ensure you are comfortable taking classes at OSU before you add an activity as time-consuming as Greek life.

We still invite and encourage you to come out to rush! Although we cannot extend you a bid, we would love to get to know you—and if you feel like we're a good fit for you, you can rush again to qualify for a bid in the future!

What is a Bid? How do I get one?

After the end of rush week, we issue bids, which are our official invitations to you to begin our New Member Process. To be considered for a bid, you need to attend at least one General Information Meeting (GIM), one service event, and one cultural event. You also need a minimum GPA of 2.5 to qualify for a bid. If you receive a bid, you will be given a time frame to consider and accept. Once a bid is accepted, the step that follows is the New Member Process.

What is the New Member Process?

The New Member Process is a learning period when you journey into becoming a sister. First and foremost, our New Member Process challenges you to learn more about yourself, our sisters, and the sorority. This is not only a time for personal development, but leadership development, as well. A key goal of the New Member Process is to enable you to step up and stand out as a sister in order to carry on Kappa Phi Lambda’s legacy here at OSU and beyond.

We would like to emphasize that Kappa Phi Lambda strictly abides by the rules and beliefs behind positive New Member Processes. There will never be a moment that Kappa Phi Lambda puts you in an embarrassing or harmful situation. OSU’s Sorority and Fraternity Life enforces a policy against hazing that Kappa Phi Lambda takes seriously. The Anti-Hazing Policy that we comply to can be found here: http://ohiounion.osu.edu/posts/documents/Anit-Hazing.pdf.
